Season Program 2014: Voces Intimae

The name of this year’s festival is inspired by the same two words which Sibelius inscribed above three chords in his friend’s manuscript of the composer’s string quartet, its purpose as elusive as the meaning of the latin text. Meaning either intimate voices or inner voices (the latter has its own musical connotations), the phrase alludes to the brooding conversation between the four players in the quartet, or perhaps Sibelius’ use of the quartet as a vehicle to voice his own furtive thoughts. While Sibelius’ use of this phrase is ambiguous, these words have a certain allure nonetheless. Music has long been the vehicle for expressing man’s inner world, while chamber music is a platform for musical conversation between instruments in live time. The theme of this year’s festival celebrates classical music as one of the most crucial dimensions of inner expression. Where words fail, music speaks.
